Frequently Asked Questions

Do you offer casual passes, or do I have to book the full 6-week term?
  • Casual passes are welcome for Technique & Shines and Ladies Styling.

  • All other courses are progressive and require a full 6-week booking to ensure the best learning experience for the group.

What happens if I miss a class or have planned travel during the term?

We know life happens, so to ensure you never lose value, please contact us and we’ll organise one of the following options for you:

  1. The Makeup Class: Drop into any other class running during the current term (e.g., Ladies Styling or Conversion On1 to On2).

  2. Next-Term Credit: Convert your missed class into a $25 Valiente Credit to use on your next term enrolment.

If I am only enrolled in the “Technique & Shines” Course, do I only get 30 minutes of weekend studio time?
As a registered student, you get the entire 1-hour studio space 100% FREE to use.

While music is dedicated to Shines for the first 30 minutes, you are highly encouraged to use the remaining 30 minutes to drill your steps using the mirrors, practice weight transfers without music, and collaborate with your fellow dancers!
It’s a fantastic free resource to fast track your progress.
How does the VD Learning Hub - Weekend Practice & Video Feedback work?
  • When & Where: Saturday mornings at our Fitzroy North studio.

  • The 1-Hour Session: Split into 30 minutes of Shines and 30 minutes of Partnerwork.

  • The Video: At the end of each block, the group films a quick 45-second front-view wrap-up video and posts it to the “Learning Hub” WhatsApp group.

  • The Feedback: Instructors drop 3 high-yield feedback points for the whole group to practice (no individual feedback).

Can you give an example of what the Group Video Feedback looks like?

Shines - Example Feedback

  1. Timing & Grounding: The group is slightly rushing the Suzy Q. stay more grounded into the floor on count 1.

  2. Syncopation (At 00:20 - 00:23): The syncopation needs to be sharper. Try counting out loud: “2&3&4&5 67”.

  3. Weight Transfer: Fully shift your weight onto the back foot in the back breaks so the front foot stays free

Partnerwork - Example Feedback

  1. Connection & Tension: Leads, make sure to keep a slight frame resistance in the hands during the open break. Followers, avoid pulling back too heavily.

  2. Footwork Precision: During the Cross Body Lead, ensure leads are stepping completely off the track on count 2 to give followers a clear runway.

  3. Frame & Hand Technique: Leads, avoid turning with your wrist to lead the movement. Followers, focus on keeping your elbow at a 90-degree angle to maintain a responsive frame.

How will ratios be managed in partnerwork classes?
We always work to keep things as balanced as possible, though getting a perfect 1:1 ratio of leads and follows can sometimes be tricky.

To ensure everyone gets plenty of practice, we rotate partners frequently throughout the class. You'll stay moving, dance with different people, and get ample time to try out your new steps.
Who has access to the VD Learning Hub - Weekend Practice?

All students registered in Technique & Shines and/or Progressive Partnerwork - You'll be added to an exclusive Learning HubWhatsApp group.
